Review: John Maxwell’s Maximum Impact Club

I can’t consider myself a young man anymore not that I’ve exceeded that age of fifty.  But in 1988, when I first encountered John Maxwell, I was much younger.  I had never heard of John Maxwell before I heard him speak at his then church, Skyline Wesleyan near San Diego.  Of course, at that time, few others had heard of him either, so I was in good company.

When I was first privileged to hear John teach, I was in the first year of my MBA program.  I was also very involved with my local church.  It was in that capacity that I was able to attend a three day conference, Max 88, that John presented to teach pastors and lay leaders how to implement his strategies for church management and growth.

Nothing has ever impacted me like that conference.  I am convinced that I learned more about practical business management in that short conference than I had earning my B.S. in Business or to that point in my MBA program.  It was also very impacting spiritually.

John’s leadership skills were amazing.  Since he was teaching pastors, he taught from experience and had the church growth and organization to prove it.  John spoke of what he knew and had done. I left that conference with an autographed book by John and a strong desire to learn more about leadership.  I also left being a John Maxwell fan for life.

Less than one year later, I relocated to my current residence in Idaho.  I continued to use John’s Bible study materials for several years in my discipleship ministry.  I also continued to tell everyone who would listen about this amazing pastor.

In a few years I began to run into John’s books in the business section of my local bookstore.  I picked up a couple.  I devoured them.  Then I picked up a couple more.  I have a very extensive selection in my library and I will be adding reviews to several of these on this site in the near future.

What does all this have to do with the “Maximum Impact Club”?  Not much, except to let you know that I have been a John Maxwell fan for some time.

When you join the “Maximum Impact Club” you will receive a CD and short note taking/study guide each month. On this CD you will hear John expound on the given topic of the month.  Most often these lessons are recorded while John is giving a larger training session to a group.  John’s lessons are almost always interspersed with examples from his own life to help personalize the lessons.

As you listen, John guides you through the note taking process on your handout.  If you miss a blank or two, the answers are always given at the end.  John’s lessons are almost always very challenging and motivating.  They are also very uplifting and educational.

I have joined John’s club at two different times in my life.  After a few years absence, I renewed my membership at the beginning of this year after beginning my PhD program.

Do I listen to John every month?  Not always.  But when I need a “kick in the pants” or to be inspired, I know right where to go.  I simply close my office door, pop in the CD and prepare to be motivated.

John’s Maximum Impact club is not inexpensive.  It will cost around what you would pay for a good business book monthly.  But, there’s nothing that quite compares to hearing the voice of the leader’s leader inspire, motive and lead.  That alone is worth the cost.
